Food and Nutrition Is a Vital Part of Early Years Teaching
14th November 2017
According to Merriam, Nutrition is “The act or process of nourishing or being nourished; specifically the sum of the processes by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances.”
Teachers along with the parents play an important role in a child’s life. Often times we think that it is enough to eat food for the growth of our body. What we overlook is that even though we require food it is necessary that we intake a proper nutritious diet. While we are in our childhood that is the time there is a holistic development which includes the body and mind. Thus it is very necessary for a child to follow a well-balanced diet to help him get through his growing years.
In relation to child health and nutrition, it is a fact which cannot be overlooked. The journey of nutrition for a child begins from a very early stage considering the pregnancy period. During this period if the mother does not intake the requisite food and in the proportionate amount then the child will not have the desired mental development along with many other physical weaknesses. Unlike any well-nourished child, the under nourished child will lack a strong immunity thereby making him susceptible to attacks from various germs and illnesses. The problem of under-nutrition has proven to decrease a child’s activity level, social interactions, curiosity and cognitive functioning. Although parents probably do not wish that their child to be quite so hyperactively jumping all around which makes it impossible for them to manage, yet good nutrition remains a must. Thus an expecting mother is required to eat whatever seems fit for the baby’s health and find the middle way so as that there is not too much of anything or too less of anything. All these are considered of great importance in today’s learning and educational pattern. There are many courses which help an individual to understand the importance more effectively, the most popular among them being Health & Safety training for teachers.
Let us also consider how nutrition affects a child’s academics. Having a proper eating habit since the early years really helps in the proper development of the child mental ability. If a child is malnourished or overweight it affects their learning process where the child will find it difficult to concentrate or keep up with the others in the class which will straight away affect his performance in the school. Even though these children would wish to cope up with the others it would be physically impossible for them leaving them emotionally drained and later push them towards depression or any other social discomfort.
So in order to have a balanced growth with a boost of immunity for them to carry through their childhood days, it is really important that along with the parents, you as a teacher also keep a check on the eating habits of their students during schools lunches and ensure that they do not develop any bad eating habits.
